Hey, everybody, I’m still sorry to have missed our reunion, but a long birdwatching trip to Indonesia’s islands was a temptation not to pass up.

More recently, I gave in to a really nagging temptation: to set foot on my seventh continent (see photo). I realized I’d been stuck on six since the mid-1980s, and that seemed a long time. Since I wasn’t getting any younger — and Antarctica wasn’t getting any closer — it was time to go.
Took a wonderful month-long trip that included the Falklands and South Georgia Island, where it was possible to hike the last mile of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s memorable trek to safety into Stromness, and to revel in the island’s spectacular scenery that he so enjoyed. Stay well, everybody, and I’ll see you all in 2018.
